Panelled Pencil Pot – 1
Panelled Pencil Pot – 1
I have been toying around with coming up with an idea for a CAD/CAM project to make something physcial ideally with wood. And to design in myself. Ideally I was planning to use fusion – both to learn a bit about the product that pays my wage and to make up for a deficit of practical skills.
Inpiration ended up striking and I came up with this clear design:
The goal will be to make a rectangular pencil pot with 4 sides each one of which has an inset design carved in. These would be on natural history themes: Amonites, Fern spirals, Trilobites and an arrangement of cells.
As my ability to program is better than my artistic ability and these have generative shapes my goal is to create fusion scripts / plugins to generate these panels / patterns. This also means that I can try to use them in other projects.
Fusion has a reasonably detailed API which should make this easy. (While doing this I discovered a number of parts fo the API that were under specified, and how much i deslike how fusion handles sketches). As a firdst stage I made a script to make one of the panels from parameters (dimensions, inset depth etc) this took a lot longer than just doing it by hand but taught me how the scripts work at least.
Proof of concept script to make a panel:
The next goal will be to make the cellular pattern probably with voronoi.
