Exmouth Holiday

Just back from a lovely holiday to exmouth with my parents. They had booked a self-catering flat in late Janurary during the height of the second wave in the hope that things would be better now. Thankfully things are and I was invited along.

Tyntesfield

Tyntesfield.

We stopped off at the National Trust house of Tyntesfield on the way down which was nice. Only the ground floor was open but the gardens were lovely and there was spectacular carvings to look at.

Coast

While we were there we got a chance to see some of the Jurassic coast rocks both on the beach and on a really good boat trip up the coast. Which (at least I) found interesting. The red sandstone/mudstone here is all triassic. I picked up a book on the geology of the local area which I read while we were down there and the interaction of the book and seeing things while we were there really helped solidify some geological concepts.

Bicton

We spend a day at the Bicton I always enjoy a botancial garden for the range of plants on show and how they have been arranged. One of the highlights of bicton is it’s very early Palm house which I recall from a book on the Palm house at Kew. Made from small interlocked panels of glass it looked a lot more like a insect’s coating.

City of Exeter

We had a lovely day around Exeter ending in a fish restaurant by the Quay. Despite some slight annoyance at looking for Exeters tourist information (and following signs for it) only to find it had all gone online, we had a pleasant day.

The museum turned out to be open and we had a bit of a whirlwind tour (due to restaurant booking an hour later). There was a very interesting exhibition on seeds and it seemed a museum that it would be good to go back to one day with more time.

Lymestone Manor

For mum’s birthday in feburary we never managed to have a celebration with the pandemic so with things lifting I booked and paid for our first trip to a michelin star restaurant as a treat. She enjoyed it a lot 🙂

All in all a good trip… Now to face work again tomorrow.
